Giovanni Antonio Tortorella was a mysterious figure, possibly a teacher of mathematics of the Kingdom of Naples. This is his only published work we know.
The book contains the description and instructions for use of a computing machine destined to be used by illiterates (Idiots in the title).
The machine, illustrated in the beautiful folding plate at the end of the work, is at heart an abacus, flanked on either side by a series of ten dice, each of which has one blank and five numbered sides.
With the help of this instrument the possibility to perform the four operations was increased up to the limit of 9,999,999,999
Tortorella then presents a series of tests of each calculation, and examples of calculations involving denominators, and decimal and ordinary roots.
